Just A Few Days Left To File For the March Primary

January 2, 2008. That’s the deadline to file for candidacy for any office that will be on the March 5th Texas Primary ballot. That’s just days away, and that means it is crunch time for all the campaigns who have yet to have filed.

Four out of nine? Well Eight. Apparently Alan “The Kid” Steinberg withdrew, sending all of his supporters over to the camp of Pete “I’ve got a sailor suit” Olson. In his farewell announcement, entitled “So long and thanks for all the fish”, Steinberg writes:
“I feel strongly that Pete Olson would be the best person to serve our district in Congress, and have decided to step aside in order to focus on encouraging a greater public involvement in the system as a whole.”
So Alan stepped aside. I’m sure I just heard the Olson camp breathe a sigh of relief.

By the way, if you are still scratching your head about the title of his piece, it comes from the title of the fourth of five books that make up Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe Trilogy. Hey, at least the guy is well-read.

Whose missing here? Dean Hrbacek? Bob Talton? Where’d ya go, guys? Bob: worried about losing that House seat of yours to a Democrat? Dean, worried about . . . oh, that’s right, David Wallace already DID that.

And then there is Brian and Ryan, Klock and Rowley, respectively. Dark horses that make the campaign of Alan Steinberg credible.

District 22 Candidate Backs Olson

A 25-year-old Sugar Land Republican who had been seeking the 22nd congressional seat held by Democrat Nick Lampson has dropped out of the race and endorsed one of his former Republican opponents.

Alan Steinberg, whose youth sometimes made him the subject of lampoon on local political Web sites, announced Tuesday he will no longer be running in the March primary for the four-county Congressional District 22. Steinberg said he will now support Pete Olson, a fellow Republican who had been working as a staff member to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas as well as Cornyn's predecessor, Phil Gramm.

“Pete will bring a fresh perspective to solving issues of national security and fiscal policy,” said Steinberg. “His vast experience working with both Senators Gramm and Cornyn, in combination with his military service, give him the background needed to be an effective leader on the issues and priorities of the 22nd District.”

In addition to his youth, Steinberg had been known throughout his candidacy for living with his parents, which he said was a fiscally conservative choice on his part, and his ownership of a distinct purple Corvette, around which he themed his Web site.

Steinberg's announcement doesn't do much to pare down the crowded race, which still features eight candidates seeking the Republican nomination.

Congressional District 22

Alan Steinberg, the young man campaigning for the 22nd Congressional District, has decided to withdraw from the race. Steinberg had two goals he wanted to achieve in the 22nd Congressional District: (1) to ensure that the 22nd has strong, conservative leadership; and (2) to energize young voters. Alan has done a remarkable job of campaigning on a shoe string and has displayed incredible youthful energy in his efforts. I hope Alan remains active in the Fort Bend political scene and I wish him the very best in all of his future endeavors.

Calling it Quits

Alan Steinberg has ended his foray as the youngest candidate by far in the race for the Republican nomination to face U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson, D-Stafford, in the November general election.

Steinberg, 25, is dropping out and endorsing candidate Pete Olson for the 22nd Congressional District seat in the March primary.

Steinberg had not yet filed an official application for a place on the ballot. He had established a presence, however, on Myspace.com and other social networking web sites that are thought to attract young voters.

As many of you know, my primary focus during the course of this race has been to reach out to the younger voters, to work to reduce political apathy and ignorance, and to promote a greater understanding of the political environment. This has been a great success, as I have undoubtedly inspired a greater youth involvement in the political process.

However, the job is far from finished. When I got involved in this race it was in order to ensure we here in the 22nd District of Texas had solid representation in U.S. Congress. Since this time I have gotten to know people across the district as well as the other candidates running for this position. I feel strongly that Pete Olson would be the best person to serve our district in Congress, and have decided to step aside in order to focus on encouraging a greater public involvement in the system as a whole.

Pete Olson represents a new generation of congressional leadership, and will be able to bring fresh perspectives to long term issues. With over a decade of experience working with Congress, time serving in the military, and a solid educational background, Pete will be able to serve us well in Washington D.C. I am supporting Pete Olson for U.S. Congress, and I hope that you will do the same.

Not Your Traditional Candidate

Alan "Doogie" Steinberg (as at least one blog has taken up the nickname for the 25 year old) is not your traditional candidate. Alan is redefining what it means to run for U.S. Congress.

Driving a fast car and using his quick wit, Alan jokes that the stuffed duck which sits on his dash of his 1998 Corvette Pace Car is his campaign strategist. Alan says "Members of Congress are elected to be public servants, stewards of tax dollars and as the people's 'go-to' man in Washington DC. I am tired of wasteful spending, government inefficiency, and elected officials who care more about being re-elected than serving the public. It all starts with campaigning and goes down hill from there. I will not spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on this primary, and I will use my time and energy to benefit the public rather than myself."

Refusing to be participate in typical politics, Alan spends time volunteering and has been seen working with the MS Society, Alzheimer's Association, Sheltering Arms, and Stand Up for Kids. He still makes rounds to Republican Clubs, Civic Events and other related functions, but says "I can't help people if I'm spending my days at meetings where people have already met me."

If there was ever a regular person trying to accomplish some extra-ordinary things, Alan has what it takes. Educated in Psychology, International Affairs and National Security issues, he has worked for government, academia, non-profits and the private sector. He proudly admits he's never ran for any elected position, "not even student council."

Fed up with politics as usual, Alan is looking to encourage more people to be aware and get involved. "We used to be a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, but we are becoming a government of the apathetic, by the politicians, and for the special interest groups. I am not going to take it and you should not either."

A message from a different kind of candidate…

When talking with people in the district, I am often asked what makes me any different from any other candidate running for public office. I am told that everyone says the same thing, “less taxes and smaller government,” but no one ever delivers once elected. I offer something that no one else can, a track record of smart spending. No other candidate is running a campaign on less than $700 a month. I can do this because I have found ways to do things cheaper, better, and more efficiently than others, and that is just the type of outside the box thinking we need in Washington, DC!

What makes me a truly unique candidate is my desire to reach out to the public to get the know your issues, hear your concerns, and start a dialog with you on the solutions. I strongly encourage you to get involved though the Commentary and Questions section of my website where you can read my thoughts on issues, the comments by the public, and engage in the dialog. No other campaign offers you the opportunity to discuss the issues one on one with the candidate and with other members of the public in this manner!

I am committed to serving the public, through engagement and through involvement. I am the only candidate who spends more time volunteering for the public good than asking for the public’s money. Some candidates will highlight their donations and attendance at fundraisers, but this was paid for with your money! It is not benefiting the public or the charity, but rather the politician who participates in the event.

All I want from the public is for you to spread the word of my campaign and my desire to serve. Take a few minutes to talk to 10 of your friends or family members about my campaign, so that they can be informed about who is running for office, and not just see the signs and advertisements of candidates who care more about spending your money than making your neighborhoods a better place to live.

25-Year-Old Aggie Grad to Make Run for Congress

A young man who has never held an elected position wants to be the next Republican from Texas to run for the United States Congress in the November 2008 election.

Alan Steinberg, 25, of Sugar Land, Texas has set hit sites on District 22. The only difference between Steinberg and the other candidates is his age and that he still lives at home with his parents.

Steinberg says his toughest obstacle running for Congress is his age.

He grew up in Sugar Land, graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from Texas A&M and a Master's degree in defense and strategic studies from Missouri State. He's worked for the defense department in Washington.

Steinberg says he decided to run for Congress this summer after having enough of politics. He wants to see elected leaders who will listen more to constituents and not special interest groups.

The primary election for Congressional District 22 will be in March.

Candidate, 25, who's never held office runs for Congress

(10/15/07 - KTRK/SUGAR LAND, TX) - A local man has his eye on Washington, DC. But what makes him different from the other candidates in District 22 is his age.

There are at least nine candidates who have indicated they want to be the republican candidate in Congressional District 22. Only one lives at home with mom and dad.

Driving a flashy purple Corvette which in 1998 was the official pace car for the Indianapolis 500, Alan Steinberg jokes that the stuffed duck which sits on his dash is his campaign strategist. While pounding the pavement and talking to voters, the 25-year-old gets serious, saying one of the toughest obstacles he's facing is his age.

"Everyone has something older than me," Steinberg explained. "Whether it's a bottle of scotch, a pair of boots, a hat -- someone's got something. Usually it's their kids."

He grew up in Sugar Land, graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from A&M and a master's degree in defense and strategic studies from Missouri State. He's worked for the defense department in Washington and proudly admits he's never held any elected position.

"I have none," he said. "Never ran for anything. I never even ran for student council."

But he says he decided to run for Congress this summer after having enough of politics as usual. He wants to see elected leaders who will listen more to constituents, not special interest groups. He describes himself as a fiscal conservative -- a label he says exemplified by the fact that he lives at home in Sugar Land with mom and dad.

"I just think of it as being responsible with money," Steinberg explained.

Most of the other candidates are nearly 20 years older than Steinberg. One is nearly 30 years his senior.

District 22 candidate Shelley Sekula-Gibbs said, "Serving in Congress gives me a lot of experience going forward and makes me a better representative to the people."

The competition, though, says Steinberg's age is not of greatest concern. They suggest his lack of political experience is a larger issue.

Former Sugar Land Mayor Dean Hrbaceck said, "I think that's going to be very important in a voter making a decision, versus someone who has an unproven or unknown track record."

A person must be at least 25 years old to take office. The youngest congressman ever is Adam Putnam of Florida who was 26 at the time of his election last fall.

One more note on our young candidate. You'll remember Tom DeLay served as representative for District 22 for a number of years. Age Not A Deterrent for Dist. 22 Hopeful

Another candidate has announced his bid for congressional District 22. While the platform for his campaign is eradicating inefficiencies and 'wasteful spending' in government while lowering taxes, voters may focus on a different issue - his age. At 25, Sugar Land resident Alan Steinberg is by far the youngest candidate bidding for the district seat.

"I think already (my age) has a dual effect," said Steinberg. "You have the people who have the jokes - 'I have shoes older than you...' A lot of other people think it is great, they like the fact that they have a young person who is willing to get involved to effect change."

"Basically I am fed up with government inefficiencies and wasteful spending, and I don't see anyone willing to stand up and do anything about it," said Steinberg. "The biggest thing I want to do is bring it to the public's attention. People consider it a necessary way to do things in Congress and it wasn't originally and it doesn't have to be anymore."

"Another thing I am really unhappy about is (once) politicians get elected, their focus becomes reelection rather than the issues," said Steinberg. "They are already taking the next step."

Steinberg says his youth and lack of political experience has the benefit of leaving him unencumbered by affiliations with lobbyists and owing no 'political favors.'

"I don't owe anybody anything," he said. "I am not your traditional candidate. I am happy to embrace that."

A Lucky 7 Republicans Want to Run Against Nick Lampson

Or as I like to call him, “The Kid”. Alan is 25 years old. Isn’t that just the cutest thing? This is the constitutionally enacted minimum age to be a congressman. Alan says he wants to set a new pace for CD 22. I’ll say. Nowhere on his web page could I locate words to the effect that he is a card-carrying member of the NRA.

But I did find this out:

Getting crowded in CD22

More folks are lining up to take a crack at the GOP nomination for CD22 and the right to run against Rep. Nick Lampson next year. Gary says Mike Manlove, the term-limited mayor of Pasadena, wants in. Muse writes about Alan Steinberg, a 25-year-old from Sugar Land with a fairly accomplished resume. And Greg forwarded me a lovely email from a fellow named Pete Olson, who likes to use the phrase "Surrender Democrats". I think if he added a comma in there and got someone dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West to skywrite it over the district, he might have something. Or not. At least he seems to understand that in order to win this primary, he's going to have to bring the crazy. Stock up on your popcorn now.

Another Candidate Throws His Hat Into The TX-22 Race

A 25-year old from Sugar Land, Alan Steinberg, wants to be your Congressman. Hey, he has pictures of cute girls on his myspace page! Maybe he'll do well with that demographic.

You need to know he went to A&M. I think that's important.

He's got quite the bio. He's had fellowships and internships and published papers on weaponization of space, worked at the Department of Defense and started up a wireless company.

Overachiever, thy name is Alan Steinberg.

Expect to see more purple and yellow in CD 22

Sugar Land, TX – Fed up with the wasteful spending and government inefficiency, Alan Steinberg has returned home to explore running for the 22nd Congressional District of Texas seat in the U.S. Congress. When asked why he was running Alan replied, “I’ve been up in Washington, DC and I’ve seen first hand the problems with inefficiency and waste, and worse yet, I see that no one is working to fix it. Politicians are concerned more with getting re-elected and focus on pork projects than public good. I’ve always felt that I should do more about a problem than just complain about it, so here I am, ready to make things right.”

Many people in Fort Bend county recognize his 1998 Corvette Pace Car as the purple convertible with yellow racing stripes is hard to miss. Now people will get to know the man behind the wheel. Alan grew up in Sugar Land, attending Dulles Middle and High Schools, and is happy to be home.

Over the last few weeks Alan has been traveling across the 22nd district to get a feeling of the general public's support for his potential congressional bid. Attending a wide range of events Alan as found himself at Republican Party gatherings, civic organization meetings, and even at the Hitchcock Good Ole Days Festival where he was asked to be a BBQ judge. So far the response has been better than expected, and the purple and yellow of his pace car are becoming a regular site throughout the 22nd district, from Needville to Galveston; be sure that you too will see him soon!
